A Charter for the Safety of Journalists Working in War Zones or Dangerous Areas, drawn up by Reporters Without Borders in 2002, spells out eight principles that, if complied with by media chiefs, would help prevent and reduce dangers to media workers in such situations.

Reporters Without Borders also helped in late 2006 to get the UN Security Council to pass Resolution 1738 about protecting journalists in war zones. We encouraged the French and Greek governments to sponsor it and they persuaded other Council members to approve it. The resolution obliges UN member states to protect journalists and investigate when they are victims.
