Reporters Without Borders



Q: Reporters Without Borders (RSF) sent announcements to 114 accredited journalism programs to invite their students to participate in the contest. Do I have to be at one of those schools?
A: No, you do not have to be at one of the invited schools. As stated in the rules, the contest is open to any students enrolled part-time or full-time at institutions of higher education (community college, college, universities) in the United States and its territories. Click here to find a list of the schools we know are aware of the contest.

Q: Do I need my University’s permission to participate?
A: No, you don’t, anyone who is eligible according to the Contest Rules may participate. However if you choose to involve your University in the Contest by including their name and logo at the end of the PSA, then you will need to get permission by way of personal signature by a university dean or other authorized official. Endorsement by your University will not affect your chances of winning the Contest.

Q: Do I need to be on a team to participate?
A: We strongly encourage you to form a team of 2-3 students from your school to produce your PSA, but individual entries will be accepted.

Q: Do I have to be in a journalism program to participate?
A: No, you don’t.

Q: Who is on the jury?
A: Specific names will be announced by late March. The jury will be comprised of media and human rights professionals, and representatives from CNN and Reporters Without Borders.

Q: What is the selection process?
A: Complete entries received by 11:59pm EST on March 19, 2012 will be eligible for consideration. The RSF team will review and judge the initial field of entries and the international jury will select five finalists to be announced by April 2, 2012. The jury will judge the final five entries, and choose one to be aired nationwide on CNN, May 3, 2012.

Q: How will I be notified if my team has won?
A: A contest representative will contact you via phone or email if your team has been chosen to be one of the five finalists in the first two weeks of April. The winning team will be notified by April 19, 2012. For a list of contest winners, send a self-addressed postmarked envelope after April 20, 2012, to Reporters Without Borders USA, 1500 K St. NW #600, Washington, D.C. 20005.
