Mr. Hu Jintao
President of the People’s Republic of China

Dear President Hu,

The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize went to the jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. This makes him the world’s only imprisoned Nobel Peace Laureate. He was arrested on 8 December 2008 and was sentenced on 25 December 2009 to 11 years in prison. To our knowledge, Liu has done nothing illegal and his activities have been limited to defending human rights and press freedom, in accordance with the Chinese constitution.

Liu is still in prison, despite having won the Nobel Peace Prize. We urge you to intercede quickly to obtain his release, the quashing of his conviction and the withdrawal of all charges pending against members of his family, especially his wife, Liu Xia, who is under house arrest in Beijing.

We appeal to you to do whatever is necessary to ensure that Liu Xiaobo is freed unconditionally before 10 December, the date of the Nobel award ceremony in Oslo. We also ask you to ensure that all prisoners of conscience in China are released, and that freedom of expression is guaranteed for all of its citizens.

Sincerely,

Notes: 1. Liu Xiaobo is a Chinese literary critic, university academic, and human rights activist who has been campaigning for democratic reforms since the early 1980s. As one of the drafters of Charter 08, which calls for the rule of law in the People’s Republic of China, he was detained on 8 December 2008. His arrest was made official on 23 June 2009 and, six months later, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power.”
