President Islam Karimov’s nephew, freelance journalist Jamshid Karimov disappeared as he was returning home on 12 September 2006 after visiting his mother in a Jizak hospital. On 5 October 2006, Reporters Without Borders learned that he had been arbitrarily committed to a psychiatric hospital in Jizak for a minimum period of six months. The government has offered no explanation. An opposition supporter, Karimov had long been subject to harassment by the authorities, like his colleague Ulugbek Khaidarov.
